Jim's 40th and...

Today was son Jim's 40th birthday.  Oh my Lord, these 4 decades have zoomed by!

In the blink of an eye

Tonight we were able to be with Jim to celebrate his birthday in his hometown for the first time ever.  Jim and some good friends gathered at the Pioneer Inn for some cake, some nachos, and some beverages that, at least by the time we left, were not being overly imbibed. But then, we left earlier than ANYBODY.

Dave, one of Jim's oldest and best friends in Colorado came up from Denver for the evening and we really enjoyed his company at dinner with Jim at the Black Forest Inn. Dave is an IT guy who is currently working on what he calls Facebook 2.0, meaning the next generation of social media for the internet.

He brought out his guitar at the PI and wowed us with his riffs and songs in their open mic night.

Earlier in the day Mona and I walked about part of Central City, about 8 miles south of where we are camped.  Central City and its environs was, 160-100 years ago the richest ground in all of North America. Gold, and then silver, was panned, dug, blasted out of its earth by the ton.

Where once over 30,000 toiled and lived, creating a cultural center to rival nearby Denver, today only a couple of thousand (only 600 in the actual town) live 24/7.  But hundreds come to work the new casinos, and thousands more come by car and bus to play those casinos. Central City and down-the-hill Black Hawk are one of three areas in Colorado which allow gambling.
The highlight of my day was the conversation I had with the docent and volunteer curator of the Central City Museum.  This former High School was built in the 1870's and was, and is, one of the finest school buildings in the state till replaced a couple of decades ago by a wonderful high tech building north of town on rte 119.

Alan is a retired professor of history who grew up in the Rosemont area of Philadelphia.  He shared some wild tales of the gold rush and the wish that Michael Vick would never have come to the Eagles.  But yes, he is very much a Phillies fan and says he tries to never miss a game when they come to Mile High Stadium.
