Today was a
day to relax and meet new people. From
the cute four year old and her baby brother and mom at the Laundromat who was
so proud of being newly four, to the couple dozen new friends we made at the
Hopewell Church Chili cook Off and game night this afternoon and evening.
Shortly
after we returned from our morning at the laundry we heard a knocking at our
coach door and there stood the pastor welcoming us formally to his church and
inviting us to this evenings picnic.
Pastor Jim Elder has just arrived this summer at Hopewell and is excited
to be a part of this churches desire to grow.
Jim had just
returned today from a two day bicycle jaunt in the Blue Ridge Mountains and
though tired, when the volleyball net was set up he played with the best of
them. Notice I said ‘them’. I played as well, but far from the best. But it was all for fun, and when we finally
did get started at keeping score, our team won despite me.
There were
about a dozen different chilis to try and enjoy and more than enough hotdogs
and desserts if the chilis didn’t satisfy your hunger alone. Everyone was
encouraged to put a love offering in the basket in front of the chili they
liked the best and that money would go toward buying equipment for the new Tech
Team.
Brenda’s HOT
chili took first prize. I wonder what
first prize was? But she did receive a
bold blue ribbon to proudly wear!
Yes,
Hopewell is coming into the 21st century of electronic worship. First
with a blended style of music and later, perhaps, with a separate praise style
service. Screens and computers are next on their purchase list. Change is hard,
but happening, at Hopewell UMC.
Time to set
our alarm. Sunday school starts at 9:15
am. Then we hook up TOAD and pull out
for Lebanon UMC just below Orangeburg, SC. Another leg on the journey to the
beach.
