Books to Brubeck (Dave, that is)

Libraries again today!  I missed a pic of the Hardeeville branch of the Jasper County System, and the Bluffton Branch in Beaufort County was closed when we got there but Hilton Head Island’s was open and books were found!

Then we stopped at the Northern Hilton Head Post Office and picked up the package of mail daughter Jenn had sent us from her home and our address in Columbia, PA.  TY Jenn!

A drive back to Bluffton was next for a picnic lunch and an afternoon of relaxation at the Town Dock, where the steamers going between Savannah and Beaufort used to stop in the 19th century, and on the Episcopal Church lawn which fronts the May River next to the dock.

At high tide dolphins begin to run the river feeding on the moving fish.  We saw several, but they were on the other side of the stream and too far away to get a good shot.

But we so enjoyed reading in the fresh air and watching the sun dappled water move so gently in front of us.

We walked around the old center of Bluffton.  A couple of the Civil War period homes remain but when the first Union troops arrived in 1861 to occupy this strongly Confederate community the town was pretty much taken over by the federal Army and not much was left in usable condition after the war.

Home in time for a quick supper and then a walk across the parking lot to Church of the Palms UMC, our camp host this week, for a wonderful SUN CITY JAZZ BAND presentation.

Sun City, whose main gates are located just 10 minutes from the church,  has thousands of homes and many thousands of senior residents who own them in many types of neighborhoods.  But all of the neighborhoods are connected by community facilities of the first rank, and groups, clubs, and musical groups, from Rock to Bach, meet together in them.

CotPUMC has several members who play or sing in this band and tonight was their evening to shine.  You never know what you’ll discover as you stay at different UM Churches across our country.

Tomorrow I wake up to join the men of CotP at 8am to spread pine needles in all of the landscape beds around the church.  This, and so much more, is all prep for next Saturday’s Fall Fest here which funds much of the outreach mission work of the church.

We signed up to help on the 25th in any way we can. Pastor Pete said they could use help making the Pulled Pork BBQ that morning.  This should be interesting.  I’ve only ever eaten PP BBQ before!
